HSBC Employee Review

Mixed experience, some high highs and low lows

Pros

Forward thinking in some areas and domains If you are a technologist, you will easily stand out among your “peers” Great for anyone who is internationally mobile, and wants to grow their career that way Almost everyone is friendly and approachable

Cons

Too many people in Tech who aren’t technical enough, and leadership is not addressing it Constant re-planning of investment budgets due to cost challenges Global teams in London and Hong Kong want to command and control, though are rarely capable of executing

Comments

Get serious about managing lack of tech expertise in Tech roles, there’s no excuse for anyone in Tech to not be technical Figure out how to avoid constant investment budget replans. It’s disruptive and demoralising

Pros: Extremely flexible working conditions. Beautiful new downtown Buffalo office location. Generous benefits package, including parental leave. Generous time-off. Progressive culture.
Cons: They are constantly restructuring and changing strategies every few years. They talk big game about well-being but will eliminate the positions of top performers who have years of expertise, with no warning, right before the holiday season. They are moving more and more FC compliance jobs to "centers of excellence" in non-US countries to cut costs - despite employees in those places not having the appropriate training, expertise, and support to succeed. Their tech support for systems access/issues is dismal. Few opportunities for career advancement or even lateral moves.
