If you’re going to work in the shipping industry, work at UPS. Being a Package Handler is the same anywhere, but UPS is the best because you have a union and good benefits. Since UPS is union, as a package handler you are guaranteed 3.5 hours every day you come into work that you are scheduled. When I worked as a package handler at FedEx, they didn’t have a union and they could send you home at any time. There are plenty of opportunities in the company to move up, once you turn 21 you can put your name in for a driver bid if there are open spots at your center. Also every center pays $21/hr minimum.
Management is usually not very good, supervisors are not union so it’s a weird dynamic where they want you to do certain things, but we’re only supposed to do what the union tells us. Also the job itself is really physically demanding, it’s why I ended up leaving. Most people leave for this reason, so the job has a really high turnover rate. They hire basically anybody. Summers in the trucks were brutal.
Not everything is about numbers! You have people working in trucks remember that they are people and don’t work them too hard
